Once you leave Port Hedland at the north end of the Pilbara, there is almost nothing until you reach the town of Broome, almost 604km further up the coast. It is probably one of the most boring stretches of Australian highway. However the journey is well worth the
effort.
Broome for many people is the place to stop off and chill out on the road to Darwin. Palms sheltering the beaches, clear blue waters a relaxed
atmosphere and a historically varied past. The recent aboriginal history is one typical of Australia, conflict brought on by a competition for scarce
resources. Surprisingly Broome has its own China Town and a Japanese influence - the result of Japanese Pearl divers who arrived in 1880s.
Broome is something of a festival centre, with Festivals happening from March through to November. The Festivals include the Chinatown Street Party in March, Dragon Boat races in April, Shinju Matsuri festival in August belying the settlements Japanese Influence, and the Stompen Ground in September, a celebration of Aboriginal culture from the area.
