| Just what sort of work you choose is very much an individual thing. Some people who travel hope to find work related to their chosen careers to gain more experience and improve their CVs. Others may consider taking a total break from what they usually do and try something new.
And there are those who didn’t think about it, but have just heard from their bank, which is concerned about a mounting credit card bill. Before you leave home it is worth taking a few minutes to think about which category you fit
into. There is nothing more frustrating than seeing a job that is perfect for you, which you have all the qualifications for, but all evidence of your experience is in the bottom drawer of your desk at home. There can also be problems if you want to go for a job interview but have nothing better to wear than a beer stained T-shirt and a pair of homemade cut-off shorts.
Many jobs these days, even unglamorous ones such as bar work, go to the best presented people, so it may be worth spending a little time back home, organising an up-to-date CV, copies of your references and certificates, as well packing a set of smart clothes.
You should also consider setting aside money to buy good clothes for when you’re ready to find
work. As you can only work for three months with one employee, it is often hard to find work in your chosen career. You may find it’s easier to stick to temp work and seasonal work, like bar work and fruit-picking. |
