Au Pair
One of the classic backpacker jobs. There is a large amount of work available for those with good experience and references.
Nursing
An excellent job for those with the right qualifications and the right registration (check what is required before you leave home or with local agencies. Requirements will vary from state to state). Hospitals hire casual staff through agencies, usually by the day.
- Healthstra
- Australia's largest supplier of health workers, employing health care assistants, enrolled nurses, registered and specialist nurses.
Sales
An area with increasing opportunities. A lot of companies are happy to take on backpackers for the more lowly jobs. The pay can be very good, if you are good at it. Perth is not short of this type of work, check out the West Australian on a Wednesday morning, it almost always has a wide variety of 'sales' type work. The Traveller's Club Notice board also has numerous opportunities many of which do not make it into the paper.
Telemarketing
Not for everybody, but can pay very well. Check the telephone directory for companies as there is usually a high turnover in these jobs. The West Australian always has Telesales and Telemarketing jobs going. Try for the positions that offer a basic wage plus commission, rather than commission alone. They love backpackers and the Travellers Club notice board is not short of adverts directly aimed at travellers. There is also usually no requirements about dress.
Resort Work
Many jobs come by word-of-mouth but some are advertised through newspapers and Access offices. Also consider a ring-around of resorts if you are well-qualified.
Banking and Finance
The banking, finance and stockbroking industries always require temps to cover peak periods. Look out for temp agencies that specialise in these areas.
Make sure you wear good clothes and take an up-to-date, well-presented CV to the interview.
Farm Work
Another great Aussie experience is to work on a farm (and it will give you little opportunity to spend your hard-earned money). Sometimes positions are only available on a ‘food and board’ basis. But some may develop into paying jobs if you prove to be the right person for the task and commit to staying on a bit
longer. Mechanics, welders, cooks and horse riders will find farm work easier to come by. Another great advantage is a drivers licence for larger vehicles.
